 THE PROJECT

 BRINGING

 AQUAPONICS

 TO MILILANI MAUKA  ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!

Steps Taken

  • I plan to collect data by giving these students a pretest and a post test. These questions will include, “how do plants get food, can plants live in anything but dirt, what do plants need to survive, what do fish do for plants, etc.”

  • Students will know little to nothing in the pretest, and after about a month of teaching these students, they will know more and improve on their information from my lessons.

  • Data collection from a pretest and a post test will give me data that I will be able to compare and contrast from one another.

  • The best way to collect useful data is to have students fill out their own research. Students will draw and complete a diagram of the aquaponics system.

This aquaponics project will consist of educating 1st grade and kindergarten elementary students. These students will:

  • Learn how plants do photosynthesis

  • Learn what glucose is and what it does for plants

  • Learn how plants can function in an aquaponics system

Students will be assessed through two types of pre tests, and two types of post tests. (One multiple choice, one free response)

Why this is important!

  • These students are the future of Hawaii's sustainable farming, agriculture, and scientists! It is important to instill interest and importance of sustainability in young children.

  • Students don't cover sustainability or the science of plants until the higher grades.

  • The Earth needs to be taken care of, and it starts with our youth!
